The Washington Capitals will watch Tom Wilson and Logan Thompson go for gold on Sunday, as Team Canada rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Finland in the Olympic semifinals for a 3-2 win.
Wilson played a vital part in that victory, as he threw several hits, played a strong two-way game and, ultimately, helped set up the game-tying goal in the third. The 31-year-old helped keep the puck in the zone and sent it back toward the goal, where ultimately, Shea Theodore was able to beat Juuse Saros and make it a 2-2 game.
From there, Canada scored on the power play with 36 seconds to go in regulation, as Nathan MacKinnon put home the game-winner to help Canada advance to the gold medal game. Sam Reinhart also scored for the Canadians.
Wilson finished the game with one assist and a plus-1 rating through 12:47 minutes and has four points in five games so far this tournament, along with 29 penalty minutes.
"(What he brings) is now being appreciated on a Team Canada level... it now really perks people's ears up to how effective Tom Wilson is and how great of a player he is."
Thompson, who has been backing up Jordan Binnington, appeared in one game so far for Canada, stopping 24 of 25 shots for a .960 save percentage.
Canada will face the winner of the USA-Slovakia semifinal game for gold on Sunday at 8:10 a.m. ET. Finland will face the loser for bronze on Saturday.
Wilson and Thompson's teammate, Martin Fehervary, leads Slovakia in average ice time per game so far through the Olympics. Slovakia faces Team USA at 3:10 p.m. ET on Friday.
Either way, Canada is guaranteed some type of hardware.
