The NHL Department of Player Safety responded to the tensions that boiled over in Game 3 between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens, fining Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson for their scrum that spilled over onto the bench.
Wilson and Anderson were each fined $5,000 for "unsportsmanlike conduct," the DoPS announced on Saturday.
At the end of the second period, as the Capitals were crossing the ice to head to the dressing room, Wilson and Anderson both exchanged words before getting into a scrum on the ice. That fight escalated, and both took matters onto the Washington bench as they continued to throw punches with the official trying to break them up. All the while, players exchanged shoves and words on the ice.
Wilson and Anderson were officially broken up, but continued to shout at each other before Wilson went on to chirp Juraj Slafkovsky, mocking him for crying. Both Wilson and Anderson received matching roughing minors and 10-minute misconducts, and ultimately returned to end the game, a 6-3 loss for the Capitals.
Washington and Montreal will be back in action on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Bell Centre.
