ARLINGTON, V.A. -- The Washington Capitals got more business done on Tuesday, re-signing defenseman Alexander Alexeyev.
Washington Alexeyev to a two-year extension that carries an AAV of $825,000. It pays $775,000 in 2023-24 and $875,000 in 2024-25.
The contract comes shortly after the team inked Ivan Miroshnichenko to his entry-level contract. Alexeyev was a restricted free agent..
In 32 games this season, Alexeyev picked up five assists and a plus-minus rating of minus-2. The 6-4, 213-pound blueliner also had 48 blocks, 33 hits and 16 giveaways.
To open the season, Alexeyev was recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in offseason training that led to surgery. When he was healthy, he served mainly as an extra and then interchanged with Matt Irwin when John Carlson got hurt.
Then, when the sell-off prior to the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline saw Dmitry Orlov and Erik Gustafsson depart, he played a full-time role, often working on the third pairing with Irwin.
General manager Brian MacLellan said on breakdown day that he believes that the Capitals have room to improve on defense, and said that he sees a lot of potential in Alexeyev and the left side.
"We've got three 23-year-old guys that are all looking to improve and get better and get to the next level," MacLellan said, referring to Alexeyev and fellow blueliners Rasmus Sandin and Martin Fehervary, who is an RFA also due for a contract.
MacLellan added to the left side last week, inking top European free agent defenseman Hardy Häman Aktell to a one-year deal.
