ARLINGTON, V.A. -- Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin's shot from the "office" has become such an iconic part of D.C. history that it's officially being marked on the ice at different rinks in the area.
MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the Capitals practice facility that hosts a number of leagues in Northern Virginia, has officially installed the "Ovi's Office" logo near the top of the left faceoff circle on its two ice rinks.
The logo is a blue circle that features Ovechkin's No. 8 and the words "Ovi's Office." It refers to the area where Ovechkin has scored a good amount of his power-play goals off his iconic one-timer.
Ovechkin said that having that logo put on rinks is exciting and that he expects a few chirps from his teammates, too. He also never imagined he'd make such a mark in this league that it would be marked as an official part of the ice surface.
"It's great. I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be lots of jokes around the locker room, but I’ll take it," he said, adding, "I’m always saying, like, when you came to NHL, you try to maybe score one goal, you know, play good one year. But when you reach those milestones, it’s kind of crazy things.”
Ovechkin's 299 career power-play goals are the most in league history. He currently sits at 822 goals and is 73 away from passing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL's all-time goals leader.
The logo is also a tribute to the 6-foot-3, 238-pound winger for having passed Gordie Howe for second on the league's all-time goals list back on Dec. 23. It's set to be placed at select rinks that will be named at a later date.
