After a flat showing in Winnipeg, the Washington Capitals got back to work with an intense practice on Tuesday in Edmonton, working on battle drills and the forecheck with the team looking to correct its mistakes prior to Wednesday's meeting with the powerhouse Edmonton Oilers.
Washington also got some positive signs on the injury front, as Nic Dowd and Martin Fehervary both took part in line rushes, and head coach Spencer Carbery said that both could potentially be back in the mix.
"They're continuing to trend in the right direction, so we'll see for tomorrow," Carbery told reporters.
The Capitals bench boss also had his team work on getting chances around the net and generating offense following a 3-0 shutout loss to the Winnipeg Jets last night, where Carbery said a lot of mistakes were on display that needs to be cleaned up prior to taking on Connor McDavid and Edmonton.
"We're looking at a few things from last night that feel like we're going to need to be a lot better in going into tomorrow night, so we got to work on those," Carbery said.
Washington last faced the Oilers back on Nov. 24, falling 5-0 in one of the worst showings of the season. Both teams look different, with the Capitals relying on more youth amid injuries and Edmonton trading for the likes of Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick.
When it comes to a better performance on the forecheck, Carbery cited puck management and control.
"Puck placement being one, decision making through the neutral zone of when we have numbers, when we're generating a controlled entry, when we aren't... We got to do a way better job of finding a way to at least keep that puck ina. tight area when we're arriving on time with a good stick and physicality when we can, and that was non-existent last night," he said.
Puck drop between Washington and the Oilers is at 10:30 p.m. ET.
