Reports spread that Jakub Vrana would be placed on waivers amid struggles on Monday, but the former Washington Capitals winger did not hit the wire and could be on the move.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported at 2 p.m. ET that Vrana was not among those on waivers, and that he "has been available for a trade." In turn, it is possible that he is on the move.
Vrana is on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds. The move comes after a number of healthy scratches and head coach Craig Berube wanting the Czech winger to rediscover the offense in his game, as he has just two goals and four assists in 19 games this season.
Washington originally selected Vrana 13th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. He was a staple in D.C. for years and had been a critical member of the 2018 Stanley Cup champion team, scoring a breakaway goal in the Cup-clinching Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.
After that, though, Vrana struggled with consistency and didn't align well with ex-head coach Peter Laviolette's systems. As a result, general manager Brian MacLellan traded the "frustrated" forward to the Detroit Red Wings in a deal to acquire Anthony Mantha.
Mantha has had his share of struggles since joining D.C., but now, he is rediscovering his game and thriving under new head coach Spencer Carbery.
Vrana had appeared in 42 games for Detroit over three seasons. After spending some more time with Detroit and with the team's AHL-affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins following a stint in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, Vrana was traded to St. Louis last season and impressed with 14 points in 20 games.
Waivers open at 2 p.m. ET. If Vrana clears after 24 hours, he will head to Springfield.
