The 27-year-old was playing his first game back at Giant Center since his time with the Capitals organization.
As Jakub Vrana navigates a tough point in his career, the Washington Capitals' AHL-affiliate Hershey Bears did what they could to make his first game back at Giant Center feel special.
Vrana, who is currently with the St. Louis Blues' AHL-affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds, got a jumbotron tribute and a notable ovation from the fans in his return to Hershey for a Sunday showdown between the two teams.
It marked Vrana's first game back in Chocolatetown since 2017, when he was still developing with the Capitals organization. He was visibly happy and emotional as he looked to the big screen to remember his time with the Bears.
Vrana was assigned to Springfield earlier in the week after clearing waivers. The Blues had chosen to waive him following struggles to open the 2023-24 campaign, as he had just two goals and four assists through the first 19 games of the season.
The Czech winger spent three years with Hershey, picking up 35 goals and 40 assists in 88 regular-season games with the Bears.
In 2017-18, Vrana made the full-time jump to the NHL and had 27 points in 73 games while helping D.C. hoist the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.
The 27-year-old was originally taken 13th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft and spent five years with the Capitals before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings for Anthony Mantha. General manager Brian MacLellan cited "frustration" for Vrana as part of the reason for the deal.
In Detroit, Vrana got off to a strong start but was sidelined for significant time due to a shoulder injury. He also signed a three-year extension. Then, to open last season, he entered into the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, and after some time with the team and its AHL-affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins, he was traded to the Blues.
