The Capitals fourth-line center skated 15:06 minutes on Monday and missed Tuesday's practice.
The Washington Capitals will be without one of their key pieces on Wednesday against the Ottawa Senators, as Nic Dowd will sit out due to injury.
Dowd, who skated 15:06 minutes in Monday's 3-2 shootout win over the Calgary Flames, missed Tuesday's practice due to what the team called "maintenance." He took part in the team's optional morning skate on Wednesday but is not good to go and is now listed as having an upper-body injury.
The 33-year-old underwent core surgery over the offseason and acknowledged during training camp that he realized that injuries would be a reality as he continued through his career. It is unclear if this ailment is related to that, or if it is a new injury.
In 65 games last season, Dowd registered a career-high 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points.
Washington, which had the fourth-most man-games lost last season, is already operating without the services of Max Pacioretty (LTIR, Achilles), Joel Edmundson (hand, LTIR) and Charlie Lindgren (upper-body, day-to-day).
With Dowd out, Aliaksei Protas will shift to center and replace him on the fourth line. Anthony Mantha, who was a healthy scratch on Monday, will draw in and skate on that line with Beck Malenstyn on the opposite wing.
Here are the projected line combinations:
Alex Ovechkin-Dylan Strome-Tom Wilson
Connor McMichael-Evgeny Kuznetsov-T.J. Oshie
Sonny Milano-Nicklas Backstrom-Matthew Phillips
Beck Malenstyn-Aliaksei Protas-Anthony Mantha
Rasmus Sandin-John Carlson
Martin Fehervary-Trevor van Riemsdyk
Lucas Johansen-Nick Jensen
Darcy Kuemper
Clay Stevenson
Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at Canadian Tire Centre.
