The Capitals have a familiar face joining the team on this four-game road swing.

The Washington Capitals have a positive addition on their four-game road swing before the All-Star Break, as Nicklas Backstrom has joined the team on this trip.

Per Monumental Sports Network's Joe Beninati on Saturday's broadcast, Backstrom made the journey to St. Louis to be with the team as they embark on a critical road swing that could have a major impact on the playoff race. He remains on long-term injured reserve.

Backstrom stepped away from the game on Nov. 1 due to lingering issues related to his hip. He said that his hip was not responding as he'd hoped following hip resurfacing surgery in June 2022, and as a result, he would be away from the ice indefinitely.

"Given my ongoing injury situation, I decided to take some time and step away from the game. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health at this time," Backstrom said in a statement. "I want to thank my teammates, the organization and fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. I ask for privacy at this time as I determine my next steps and viable options moving forward."

General manager Brian MacLellan added that it is unlikely that Backstrom would be back this season.

Since stepping away, Backstrom has been around the facility from time to time and has stayed in touch with the team. He also skated in a tracksuit at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, per sources.

As of this moment, there are no immediate plans for Backstrom to return, nor has he made any decisions regarding retirement or next steps.
