ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals made some transactions ahead of Monday's roster deadline, moving some players around as they are required to submit their 23-man roster to the league by 5 p.m. ET.

Washington placed Max Pacioretty on the long-term injured reserve (he will miss at least 10 games to open the season) and Joel Edmundson on the injured reserve, and also reassigned Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas and Hardy Häman Aktell to the AHL's Hershey Bears while recalling Riley Sutter. Ivan Miroshnichenko, who did not skate on Monday and doesn't appear to be physically with the team, is still on the roster.

These moves, though, are not indicative of the team's opening night roster. These are paper moves to maximize LTIR and get under the cap by the deadline. After this, the team will make more moves and unveil their official 23-man roster on Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET.

McMichael, Protas and Häman Aktell are all expected to start the season up with the Capitals, so they will likely be called back up on Wednesday.

Two names that did officially make the cut are Matthew Phillips and Lucas Johansen, as Spencer Carbery announced that both did enough at training camp to secure a place on the team.

Washington is spending the next few days in Easton, Maryland, on a team bonding trip that'll feature some golf and time to unwind. Then, the team returns for practice and opens the season on Friday against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:30 p.m. ET.
