The news comes after Washington failed to make the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
ARLINGTON, V.A. -- Peter Laviolette will no longer be the head coach of the Washington Capitals.
Laviolette, who was the 19th coach in franchise history, will see his deal expire on June 30. Washington will begin the hunt for a new bench boss this offseason in what's sure to be a busy summer after the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in nine years.
"We are grateful for Peter's leadership and dedication to our organization for the last three seasons," general manager Brian MacLellan said. "Peter is a first-class individual who has represented our club with integrity and guided our team through many difficult circumstances in his tenure as our head coach. We wish him all the best moving forward."
Washington hired Laviolette prior to the 2019-20 season following Todd Reirden's departure. He led the team to back-to-back playoff berths before Washington failed to qualify this season.
At the start of the 2022-23 season, Laviolette was reportedly likely to sign an extension. Those talks trailed off, though, amid an inconsistent season filled with adversity and struggles.
In 1,430 career games coached over 21 years, Laviolette went 503-503-150. He spent 220 games behind the bench in Washington, going 115-78-27. Laviolette also had to navigate the team through several injuries with key names missing for lengthy periods of time, including Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson and John Carlson.
The move is a bold one and indicates that there will likely be plenty of change over the course of the summer.
