The Capitals defenseman had to be helped off the ice.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals appear to have avoided an injury scare with Rasmus Sandin, who returned to action after suffering an apparent leg injury in Saturday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Sandin was in an extended battle along the boards with the Sabres when Jordan Greenway landed on the back of Sandin's right leg. The referees let play continue until it became apparent that Sandin was injured.

The Swedish blueliner had to be helped off the ice by Aliaksei Protas and John Carlson and was ultimately helped down the tunnel by athletic trainers. He did not put much weight on his right leg as he exited the game.

Sandin tried to give it a go to open the third period and had gone back down the tunnel, but he ultimately returned to the ice.

Losing Sandin would have been a major loss, as Sandin leads the NHL in goals above replacement and has been having a standout season in D.C.
