The 23-year-old took a knee from Michael Eyssimont in Team Sweden's game against the Team USA.

The Washington Capitals are waiting to hear word on defenseman Rasmus Sandin, who was injured in Tuesday's IIHF World Championship game between Team Sweden and Team USA.

Sandin was clearing the puck out of the defensive zone when he took a knee from Michael Eyssimont. He went down in visible pain and limped down the dressing room tunnel. Eyssimont received a five-minute major and game misconduct.

    Here was the play:

The 23-year-old did not return to action, and his status remains unclear at this time.

Sandin was acquired days before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, with defenseman Erik Gustafsson and a pick going the other way in the deal. He had a strong start to his tenure in D.C. with 15 points in 19 games.

General manager Brian MacLellan is hoping that Sandin can be one of the rising stars on the blue line and help lead the charge on the top-4. The feeling is mutual for Sandin, who hopes to sign long-term in D.C.

Losing the Swede to an offseason injury would be a major blow to the Capitals, who are looking to return to playoff territory after missing out on the postseason for the first time in nine years.

MacLellan said the team would explore options in free agency but appeared more intent on revamping the forward lines while remaining happy with the youth on the blue line.

In addition to Sandin, Washington relies on fellow youngsters Martin Fehervary and Alex Alexeyev on the left side. Lucas Johansen also has his sights set on a possible NHL jump.
