The Washington Capitals are seeing new head coach Spencer Carbery start to fill out his staff, and Mitch Love is now on board.

Love will work primarily with the team's defenseman and join assistant coach Scott Allen and goaltending coach Scott Murray. He will replace Kevin McCarthy.

As the bench boss for the AHL's Calgary Wranglers and Stockton Heat for the last two seasons, Love led his club to a 96-33-11 record with back-to-back Pacific Division regular-season titles, and the club's 51-17-3-1 outing this year was the best in the league.

Under Love, Calgary ranked first in goals against per game (2.42) and penalty kill percentage (85.1), as well as fourth in goals for per game (3.56).

The 39-year-old was given the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding coach over the last two seasons.

Love played for years in the WHL, AHL, ECHL and CHL, cementing his legacy as an enforcer on the ice.

Washington has just one vacancy left to fill behind the bench and is looking for an assistant to help oversee the power play and replace Blaine Forsythe.
