ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Leon Muggli to a three-year, entry-level contract, general manager Chris Patrick announced on Thursday.

Muggli's contract carries an average annual value of $940,833. The plan is for him to be loaned to the Swiss National League's EV Zug for the upcoming season so that he can continue his development.

The Capitals took Muggli in the second round of this year's draft with the 52nd overall pick.

"I had great meetings with them, but I didn't thought that they would pick me, so it's kind of surprise," Muggli said about being taken by D.C.

He is a smooth-skating, shutdown defenseman who thrives when it comes to awareness and utilizing his high hockey IQ. He makes good decisions, takes care of the puck and plays smart in his own zone, and he has shown potential to contribute offensively as well.

"I would say more of a defensive two-way defenseman. Good first pass, likes to follow the rush," Muggli said of his skillset. "Good skating abilities, good hockey IQ. I'm calm under pressure and think such players as Gustav Forsling and Josh Morrissey are good comparables. Look up to them."

Not only that, but he's a proven leader who has captained the Swiss teams he's been on, and he acts beyond his years.

Muggli has also been proving his worth playing against top competition, as his time in the National League has gotten him used to playing against grown men and should better prepare him for the NHL going forward.

In 42 games with EV Zug last season, Muggli had three goals and nine assists to lead all under-18 skaters in the National League, and his 12 points were the most ever by a defenseman 17 or younger in the history of the league.
