The Washington Capitals head coaching search appears to be reaching the end, as the team is reportedly closing in a deal to make Spencer Carbery the new bench boss.
Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and multiple sources, the team is planning to hire the Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach to fill their head coaching vacancy. He would become the 20th head coach in franchise history.
The Athletic's Tarik El-Bashir added that Carbery's contract will last four years.
Carbery, was the Hershey Bears head coach from 2018 to 2021 before being hired as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has been with the Leafs for two seasons and has mainly run the club's power play.

Toronto's 26.6 power-play percentage is the second-best in the league, and the Maple Leafs' man advantage over the last two years has had the most success in franchise history. Carbery also recently helped the club make it past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 19 years.
He also played for the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays and went on to become their head coach. The Stingrays are the current affiliate of Washington.
The Capitals have been looking for a new head coach since parting ways with Peter Laviolette back on April 14.
Washington also reportedly spoke with Tampa Bay Lightning assistant and DMV native Jeff Halpern about the job, as well as Philadelphia Flyers assistant Brad Shaw. At the same time, Carbery appeared to draw a lot of interest from across the league, which potentially sped up the process.
