T.J. Oshie has left the Washington Capitals' Wednesday tilt with the Tampa Bay Lightning with an upper-body injury and will not return, the team announced.
The 36-year-old skated 6:07 minutes in the opening frame, playing on the second line alongside Nicklas Backstrom and Aliaksei Protas.
It is unclear what happened, but Oshie was not on the bench to open the second period. The severity of the injury remains to be seen.
He did take some heavy contact in his second-to-last shift, colliding with Mikhail Sergachev before taking a hit from Taylor Raddysh behind the net. Oshie was a bit slow on the backcheck toward the end of his shift.
He was out for the final seconds of the opening frame for the last face-off, but did not return for the second.
Oshie's injury is a major blow for Washington, as he's been one of the best forwards since the All-Star Break, with 18 points in 22 games.
