The Washington Capitals will see Tom Wilson's All-Star Game come to an end, as Team McDavid managed a comeback in the final minutes of regulation and ultimately defeated Team MacKinnon 4-3 in a shootout.
Wilson, skating on a line with Kirill Kaprizov and Sebastian Aho, did not get on the scoresheet but had a couple of good looks and some strong defensive plays to boot. He finished with two shots, two face-off wins and a blocked shot through 5:59 minutes of the 3-on-3 tournament, which featured two 10-minute halves and a shootout.
Nathan MacKinnon struck twice for his team, and Olivier Bjorkstrand also scored to make it a 3-1 game for Team MacKinnon in the final minutes of the third. However, David Pastrnak and Connor McDavid scored with the net empty to force the shootout, where McDavid and Pastrnak won it. Boone Jenner also scored for Team McDavid.
This marked Wilson's NHL All-Star Game, which is taking place in his hometown of Toronto.
The 29-year-old was taken with MacKinnon's seventh selection in the draft, with celebrity captain Tate McRae citing the need for grit.
"It's pretty crazy. I was talking to a few of the guys on the bus. Like I'm turning 30, and it's a huge privilege to be able to do this every day and play hockey and be in D.C. as long as I have," Wilson told reporters in Toronto. "These are the moments you're going to be looking back on later in life when you're cracking a beer on the couch, thinking back and reflecting, All-Star Game in your hometown, Stanley Cup, draft, it'll be right up there.
"You got to enjoy the highs and take it all in, because it's a huge honor and privilege to be able to be here."
