The Washington Capitals will have a few familiar faces taking part in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships, as rosters are starting to be revealed for the upcoming tournament in Gothenburg.
Washington will see Ryan Leonard and Ryan Chesley lace 'em up for Team USA, as both made the final WJC roster.
Leonard was the eighth overall pick in this year's draft and has been thriving with the Boston College Eagles with 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points in 17 games.
Chesley, who was taken in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, is in his sophomore season with the University of Minnesota's Golden Gophers. He has six points in 18 games, as well as a plus/minus of plus-9. This is his second WJC appearance after he won bronze last year.
Beyond those two, the Capitals won't have any other prospects taking the ice for the tournament.
Andrew Cristall, who is among the WHL's top players this season, did not get an invite to Team Canada's World Juniors camp, which speaks to the depth of the nation's team. It's so deep, in fact, that WHL leading scorer Jagger Firkus did not make the final roster, either.
Alexander Suzdalev, who returned to Sweden after starting the year with the AHL's Hershey Bears, was not among those selected to compete for his nation this year.
Russia and Belarus remain out of international competition due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, so names like Ivan Miroshnichenko will not be playing in the tournament, either.
World Juniors is limited to players under the age of 20, so the likes of Haakon Hanelt, Oskar Magnusson and other past WJC players will not be competing, though they've laced 'em up for their countries in the past.
The 2024 WJC takes place from Dec. 26 to Jan 5.
