ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals prospect Cole Hutson isn't in any rush when it comes to his hockey career, though he looks more and more ready to take that next step.

Hutson, who led the way as a top standout at Capitals Development Camp, is set to return to Boston University for his sophomore season after an impressive freshman campaign saw him overcome adversity, grow his game and put up 48 points in 39 games.

"He was at a different level, he certainly seems like a guy that is ready for the next step," general manager Chris Patrick said.

The plan for Hutson is to continue to evaluate where his game is at over the course of his sophomore season, and when the season ends, meet with him to see if he wants to sign his entry-level contract.

"It feels like (Ryan) Leonard Part 2 here, we'll give him the space," Patrick said. "I think he's got some goals this year for what he wants to do at BU and then once his season's done, we'll put the push on."

For Hutson, he wants to make sure he doesn't "become a pro before he's pro," as he wants to continue to develop and round out his game properly before joining the NHL ranks.

"I think being super mature on both sides of the puck (is where I want to grow)," Hutson said. "I think taking care of the defensive side before I jump to the offensive part of my game, even though it's a lot more fun than the defensive side, that's what you're going to need to make it to the next level."

That said, he's also ready to be more of a leader and do what he can to be the player that D.C. traded up in the draft for.

"(I want to work on) little details... guiding the team when they need guidance, stepping up for your team in the big moments, just little details that'll make you stand out, that'll make the Washington Capitals want me."
