The Capitals captain's 823rd career goal holds a lot of significance.

WASHINGTON — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin ended a lengthy goal drought against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his 823rd career tally holds a lot of meaning.

Ovechkin's goal was his 300th career power-play goal, making him the first player in NHL history to score at least 300 goals on the man advantage. He has been the NHL's all-time power-play goal leader since passing Dave Andreychuk with his 275th PPG in Dec. 2021.

Meanwhile, his goal also puts him atop the NHL and WHA's era-adjusted goals leaderboard, tying him with Gordie Howe for 925.

    Here's the goal:

With the strike, Ovechkin now sits 72 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record of 894.
