WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals will be without Alex Ovechkin once again, as he will miss Tuesday's game against the Anaheim Ducks with a lingering lower-body injury.
Ovechkin did not take part in warmups and will not play, marking the third consecutive game that he will sit out due to injury. He did take part in Tuesday's morning skate and had been listed as a game-time decision, but he wasn't a part of power-play reps, and he didn't stay on for extra work.
The 38-year-old, who had played through two game-time decisions before sitting out this past weekend's home-and-home set against the New York Rangers, suffered the injury back on Jan. 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes. He collided with Jordan Staal off the face-off late in the third period, and Ovechkin took the brunt of the impact to the back of his left leg.
It is unclear what the timeline is for Ovechkin going forward. With the Russian winger out again, Hendrix Lapierre will remain in the lineup.
Washington will be left with another tall task when it comes to helping fill his void. Ovechkin leads the team in scoring this season with eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points in 39 games, and he has points in his last six outings. Though goal scoring has been hard to come by, he has found other ways to contribute on the top line this season.
The Capitals are 1-1 without their captain this season, defeating New York 3-2 back on Saturday before falling 2-1 on Sunday.
