The Capitals general manager is still pursuing a trade in order to bolster the top-6.

The Washington Capitals are still looking to make a deal, and they apparently have exact names in mind as they continue to monitor the trade market.
In a new interview with Capitals.com writer Mike Vogel, general manager Brian MacLellan reiterated that the Capitals were aggressive on the trade front at the 2023 NHL Draft and were pushing hard to make a trade to revamp their top-6, but nothing came to fruition.
Even though nothing ever came of talks at the draft, MacLellan said that there's still hope when it comes to acquiring the names that Washington had in mind.
"I feel we have some pretty good offers out there, and the guys [we're pursuing] haven't moved yet," MacLellan told Vogel, adding, "I don't know if they move them now or when they move them... I'm not sure what happens. Some guys need to be signed. So we'll stay involved in all of that stuff."
MacLellan also said earlier in the month that he and the team would continue to monitor the market and are still looking to add to the top-6, while prioritizing goal scoring and targeting players that are between the ages of 25 and 30.
Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha are arguably the team's two biggest trade chips, and MacLellan has reportedly been shopping both this offseason.
Kuznetsov and the Capitals appear to be at somewhat of a crossroads with the 31-year-old coming off a disappointing season, running into off-ice issues over the last few years and reportedly requesting a trade at one point (though he somewhat denied this, Vogel pointed out in the interview that Kuznetsov did have a desire to leave D.C.).
Meanwhile, Mantha's inconsistency and lack of production since arriving in Washington have led to speculation regarding his future as well. However, reports indicate that his trade value isn't the highest right now and that he isn't getting much interest.
Training camp opens on Sept. 20, so there is still plenty of time to work with.
