Capitals prospect Haakon Hanelt is going to continue his development overseas after two years in the QMJHL.

Washington Capitals prospect Haakon Hanelt is leaving North America to continue his development and will return to his native country of Germany to play in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga once more.

Hanelt signed with the DEL's Kölner Haie, ending a two-year stint with the QMJHL's Gatineau Olympiques.

The 20-year-old was taken in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft. Following his selection, he chose to join the Olympiques and climb the ranks through major juniors. However, it didn't go according to plan, as he had to have shoulder surgery in 2021-22 and dealt with injuries once again this past season.

Through 34 games with Gatineau last year, Hanelt had three goals and 15 assists. He had 10 points in 16 games with the Olympiques and ended the year strong following his shoulder surgery. In 2021, he represented his country at World Juniors.

He played in the DEL in his pre-draft year, skating in 22 games with Eisbären Berlin.

The German center prides himself on being a versatile player who will play any position, including defense. He plays a solid two-way game and has good vision, a high hockey IQ and strong playmaking ability. Hanelt also battles hard at both ends, plays with speed and is a strong skater to boot.

Hanelt attended development camp this past year and training camp, impressing with his effort on the ice.

The 6-foot, 190-pound pivot is not yet signed to an entry-level deal, so this year will be vital for him to show that he can be a strong pro contributor while proving his worth to the Capitals organization.
