ARLINGTON, V.A. -- With the Washington Capitals no longer fighting for a playoff spot and down to the final four games of the season, the team is taking a look at how they will address their injured players in the final days of the season.
Alex Ovechkin is dealing with an upper-body injury and is a game-time decision against the Florida Panthers. Meanwhile, Anthony Mantha is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, and T.J. Oshie and Trevor van Riemsdyk also remain out with upper-body injuries.
Head coach Peter Laviolette said that the team is discussing its options concerning its injured players, including whether or not those players sitting out will play again this year.
"There's conversations that are going on in here with regard to players," Laviolette said. "If somebody's banged up and they're healthy, we're not going to scratch healthy players. We'll finish the season with the players that are healthy and available."
Laviolette added that those talks mainly involve players that still have progress to make or aren't 100 percent ready to play.
"Those conversations come up when somebody isn't healthy trying to work their way through," he added.
Beck Malenstyn was brought up on an emergency recall amid the influx of injuries. If Ovechkin misses the game against Florida, Washington will have just 17 available skaters.
