LAS VEGAS — The Washington Capitals have acquired goaltender Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for 2024 and 2025 third-round picks, general manager Brian MacLellan said.

Washington had traded Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Pierre-Luc Dubois last week, leaving them without a No. 2 NHL goaltender.

Charlie Lindgren rose to prominence this past season and took over as the starter, and D.C. noted that it wants to give Lindgren the opportunity to continue to thrive in that role. However, Thompson gives the team another reliable option, and the two could end up competing for starts as time goes on.

General manager Brian MacLellan had mentioned wanting to look at options in net, but also said he liked what he saw from Hunter Shepard and Clay Stevenson in Hershey this season and expects both goaltenders to play NHL games at some point this coming season.

Thompson appeared in 46 games with the Golden Knights last season, going 25-14-5 with a .908 save percentage and 2.70 GAA. In 2022-2023, he had an All-Star season with a .915 save percentage.

The 27-year-old has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $766,667. He is no stranger to D.C., as he was previously an invitee at the team's development camp.

This move marks the second trade that the Capitals have made on draft day, as the team shipped Beck Malenstyn to the Buffalo Sabres in order to move up and take puck-moving defenseman Cole Hutson with the 43rd overall pick.
