Here's everything to know from Day 1 of Capitals training camp.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — There was a new kind of energy in the air at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Thursday, as new head coach Spencer Carbery officially kicked off his tenure with an action-packed practice to open Washington Capitals training camp on Thursday.
Washington's 63 skaters attending camp were split into three groups, each of which took part in skate testing before taking part in some intense, physical practices featuring some passing and zone entry drills, 2v2 battles, small area games and a look at some potential line combinations.
One player easily stood out, and it was Tom Wilson. The 29-year-old, who signed a seven-year extension in August and has officially put his torn ACL from last May in the rearview, looks to have elevated his game following a rigorous offseason of training.
Wilson was ways ahead of his teammates during skate tests, and during Group B's practice, he was leading the charge on offense, making crafty plays and wheeling up and down the ice.
Anthony Mantha was among the standouts in Group A, as the 29-year-old finished ahead of the pack in the skate tests and appeared to be more engaged and gritty during the drills at practice. He was aggressive on the forecheck, moving his feet and a man on a mission on Day 1.
His hard work was incentivized by the fact that Carbery also trusted him with a spot on the top line as the new bench boss started working with some potential combinations to kick things off.
In Group A, Carbery decided to bring some familiarity back to the mix and in Group A, put Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom on a line together with Mantha. Both Ovechkin and Backstrom looked strong, with Backstrom showing some serious improvement in his skating ability. Meanwhile, Ovechkin was also skating hard and showcasing his strength and lethal shot.
In that same group, Nic Dowd was put between Aliaksei Protas and Beck Malenstyn, offering a look at a potential fourth-line combination.
On the blue line in Group A, Rasmus Sandin was placed with John Carlson, as the team wanted to see how two offensive-minded blueliners could work together and how Carlson could help a young rising star like Sandin.
Group B offered a closer look at the rest of the early proposed Capitals forward line combinations and defensive pairings, as Evgeny Kuznetsov centered Sonny Milano and Tom Wilson while Dylan Strome worked with Connor McMichael and T.J. Oshie. Nicolas Aube-Kubel cycled in as well. On defense, Martin Fehervary and Nick Jensen were put together, followed by Joel Edmundson and Trevor van Riemsdyk.
In team news, Kuznetsov revealed that he is dealing with a minor issue to open camp, but indicated that it wasn't serious and that it could potentially clear up in a couple of days.
"It's a process," he said, while adding that he didn't plan to take off and that at times, playing injured adds a different element to his game.
Max Pacioretty was absent from camp on Thursday due to a doctor's appointment to evaluate his recovery from a ruptured Achilles. He tore the same tendon twice in a span of five months and will be undergoing treatment this week, which will then reveal a more concrete timetable for his return.
The Capitals return for Day 2 on Friday, with Group B taking the ice first.
