ARLINGTON, V.A. -- The Washington Capitals will have a new member of the team strap on the pads for Thursday's season finale against the New Jersey Devils, as Reid Cooper has signed an amateur tryout with the team under emergency conditions.
Cooper, a NCAA Division III netminder with Curry College, will back up Darcy Kuemper.
The 24-year-old went 20-6-1 with a 1.92 GAA, .935 save percentage and three shutouts through 27 games this season. He is a native of Corman Park, Saskatchewan.
Charlie Lindgren is unavailable to the club due to a lower-body injury suffered on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.
Lindgren was injured making a highlight-reel save on Taylor Hall after a stellar performance against the Bruins. He was clutching at his back and left the game early in the third period.
Washington had been dealing with numerous ailments across the roster to open the final week, with Alex Ovechkin (upper-body), T.J. Oshie (upper-body), Anthony Mantha (lower-body), Nic Dowd (upper-body) and Trevor van Riemsdyk (upper-body) all hurting to close out the campaign. Oshie was shut down for the remainder of the season on Monday.
