There's no rush on the Washington Capitals coaching search as the lengthy offseason continues, and now, a new name has emerged onto the scene: Brad Shaw.
Per The Fourth Period's Anthony Di Marco, the Philadelphia Flyers' assistant is in the running for the head coaching job in D.C. and also in Anaheim. Washington parted ways with head coach Peter Laviolette back on April 14.
Shaw played 11 years in the NHL as a defenseman and is a Capitals alumni, though his tenure was short lived. He played just four games with the club in 1998-99 before being traded to the St. Louis Blues. His coaching career started in 1999 after he hung up the skates, as he served as an assistant for the Tampa Bay Lightning while the club was in the midst of a rebuild.
After a year with the Bolts, he worked as the head coach of the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and then rejoined the NHL ranks in 2005-06 to be an assistant with the New York Islanders before joining the Blues.
His relationship with head coach John Tortorella began when both worked side-by-side with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and after a short stint with the Vancouver Canucks in 2021, he reunited with Tortorella in Philadelphia as an associate in 2022.
In addition to Shaw, Washington is also reportedly interviewing DMV native, alum and Tampa Bay Lightning assistant Jeff Halpern, as well as former Hershey Bears bench boss and Toronto Maple Leafs assistant Spencer Carbery.
General manager Brian MacLellan said that the search would include assistants, and also emphasized that the team is open to anything and is not putting emphasis on experience as the club looks to bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
From an experience standpoint, though, Shaw, 59, has quite the resume.
