MacLellan said he hopes Wilson's extension ensures he finishes his career with the Capitals.
ARLINGTON, V.A. -- Tom Wilson is officially here to stay.
The Washington Capitals have signed Wilson to a seven-year, $45.5 million extension. His new deal, which goes through 2030-31, will begin in 2024-25 and carries an AAV of $6.5 million.
General manager Brian MacLellan said that he hopes the new deal guarantees that Wilson will finish up his career in D.C.
"Tom possesses all the intangibles needed to win in this league, and we are extremely pleased to sign him to a long-term contract, giving him the opportunity to finish his career in a Capitals uniform," MacLellan said. "Throughout his career, Tom has improved every facet of his game through his drive and competitiveness. We feel his work ethic and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset to our organization for years to come."
Wilson also delivered a video message following the signing, thanking fans and the city and saying that it was always his goal to ink a long-term deal and remain with the team. He was set to hit free agency next summer.
"So excited to sign an extension to stay with this team. It's really what I always wanted," Wilson said.
The 29-year-old has been a vital part of the lineup over the last few seasons, and in an All-Star caliber 2021-22, he hit multiple career highs with 24 goals, 28 assists and 52 points. A torn ACL delayed the start of his 2022-23 campaign, but he picked up where he left off and finished with 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points in 33 games, which would have put him on pace for 55 points.
Wilson is a three-time 20-goal scorer and has emerged as a key leader in the room. He is also the likely candidate to take over the captaincy when Alex Ovechkin hangs up the skates.
