The Capitals may have a good idea of what their opening night roster will look like.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals got back to work on Monday following a day off and another round of cuts, and Group A offered a look at what could be the team's opening night roster.
Group A featured 14 forwards, eight defensemen and the tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren. Here's how it stacked up:
Forwards: Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Nicklas Backstrom, Nic Dowd, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Beck Malenstyn, Anthony Mantha, Connor McMichael, Sonny Milano, Matthew Phillips, Aliaksei Protas, T.J. Oshie, Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson
Defensemen: Alex Alexeyev, John Carlson, Martin Fehervary, Hardy Häman Aktell, Nick Jensen, Lucas Johansen, Rasmus Sandin, Trevor van Riemsdyk
Goaltenders: Darcy Kuemper, Charlie Lindgren
Matthew Phillips has had a standout camp and preseason, and has earned an extended look as a potential extra forward. Connor McMichael, Beck Malenstyn and Aliaksei Protas have also done enough to prove they can be full-time NHLers to open the year.
Meanwhile, on defense, it looks like Hardy Häman Aktell, Alex Alexeyev and Lucas Johansen are the three fringe defensemen still in the running for a roster spot.
Group B is a Hershey-heavy group, though there are still several names that could step up to prove they could earn a look up with the big club. Ivan Miroshnichenko moved down to that group, indicating that he could likely start the year with the Bears as he continues to adjust to North America. Hendrix Lapierre is also down with that group, along with Joe Snively.
Here's the Group B:
Forwards: Hendrix Lapierre, Alex Limoges, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Michael Sgarbossa, Joe Snively
Defensemen: Vincent Iorio, Dylan McIlrath
Goaltenders: Hunter Shepard, Clay Stevenson
