"Apparently, there's a form we were supposed to fill out..." the Capitals prospect explained with a laugh.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals prospect Vincent Iorio saw his dream come true this June as he and the Hershey Bears hoisted the Calder Cup, and though Iorio spent plenty of time with it, he didn't get his day with it.
Why? There was a miscue on Iorio's end.
"Apparently, there's a form we were supposed to fill out," Iorio said with a laugh. "I didn't know."
Iorio appeared to miss the deadline to fill it out and therefore, didn't get his day with the Cup. Still, there are no hard feelings for the 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman.
"I never had the chance... but to see on social media, all the older guys with it, it just makes me so happy because they worked so hard for so many years. And to see all of us get the chance to have it and lift it, it's pretty cool."
In 63 games for Hershey last season, Iorio had two goals and 20 assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-17. He was a force to be reckoned with and showcased his impressive skating ability and physicality, and his hard work also earned him three games up at the NHL level, where he registered one assist.
Coming into this season, Iorio said the expectation is to compete for a roster spot and to continue to build on his game. Ultimately, though, he took a lot away from his first full pro season and said the biggest challenge going forward is to balance the ups and downs.
"First year, there's a lot of ups and downs... it's pretty rigorous," Iorio pointed out, adding, "Just keeping like, mentally strong and just keeping the mentals up to par is the biggest thing for me."
