ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals added to their depth chart on Friday, signing forward Zac Funk to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Funk's contract will carry an AAV of $810,000 at the NHL level and $82,500 at the AHL level, general manager Brian MacLellan announced on Friday.

The 20-year-old has been having a standout season in the WHL and has 56 goals and 43 assists for 99 points in 58 games for the WHL's Prince George Cougars. He currently leads the league in goals, power-play goals (25), plus/minus (plus-44) and hat tricks, with eight to date.

Funk was not drafted, and he is a big-time pickup for the Capitals. The 6-foot, 189-pound winger can play on either side and has a wicked shot and high hockey IQ. He can get to the high-danger areas and work wonders with the puck, making him a major threat on the ice.

He also has a physical side and plays with grit, and he will drop the gloves when necessary.

Washington has struggled to score this season and is looking to retool and get younger up front while adding some more high-octane scoring for the future. The Capitals have also been searching for a young player capable of being a top-6 forward, and Funk carries that upside as he continues to come into his own and find his game at the WHL level.

Getting a player like Funk gets D.C. a major asset for the future, as he'll join Ryan Leonard, Andrew Cristall and Ivan Miroshnichenko as the team establishes a new, promising young forward core.
