New details are emerging with regard to the Arizona Coyotes' decision to terminate Alex Galchenyuk's new contract with the team.
Arizona announced on Thursday that the team placed Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers with the intention of terminating the deal that he signed on the opening day of free agency. The Coyotes declined further comment.
Now, The Athletic's Katie Strang is reporting that the termination comes after Galchenyuk's arrest in Scottsdale, Arizona.
"Scottsdale Police Department has confirmed to The Athletic that Alex Galchenyuk was arrested on July 9 on a number of charges including private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, threatening or intimidating," Strang wrote on Twitter.
Police also told Strang that there were no injuries, but there was property damage. Court records say that Galchenyuk was booked into the city jail on Sunday and released on Monday "on his own recognizance," and he was also arraigned that day.
The 29-year-old played in just 11 NHL games last season with the Colorado Avalanche, posting a plus-minus rating of minus-8 and no points. He had last played for the Coyotes in 2021-22, registering 21 points in 60 games. Galchenyk also skated with Arizona in 2018-19, picking up 19 goals and 41 points in 72 appearances.
There had been high hopes for Galchenyuk's career, as he went third overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. Despite a few standout seasons, he hadn't been able to maintain the same production going into the later part of his career.
