ARLINGTON, V.A. -- The Washington Capitals got a positive sign at Wednesday's optional morning skate, as injured winger Sonny Milano took the ice and continues to work his way back from an upper-body injury.
Milano was in a non-contact jersey and skating for the first time since suffering the injury, though he didn't stay on for extra work. He will not play on Wednesday against the New York Islanders, though he is trending in the right direction.
"He's making progress but it's slow," Peter Laviolette said. "So it's nice to have him out on the ice today."
The 26-year-old also missed Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He appeared to be injured in Thursday's 6-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks after taking a hard hit from Connor Murphy.
Milano is not on the injured reserve, though on Saturday, the Capitals announced that he would be out for at least a week.
Through 58 games this season, the Long Island native has 11 goals and 21 assists. He signed a one-year deal with Washington a few games into the regular season and has since become a key part of the top-6. His play was also rewarded with a three-year extension.
Without Milano in the mix, Washington has just 12 forwards available, and the tteam has not made any recalls. Craig Smith, who was dealing with a lower-body injury on Monday, appears good to go, and Aliaksei Protas, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Anthony Mantha are expected all be in as well.
The Capitals face the Islanders at 7:30 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena.
