The Washington Capitals have a handful of prospects competing at the 2023 World Junior Summer Showcase in Michigan, and a couple of them have stood out as the tournament gets underway.
Suzdalev skated on Sweden's top line to open the showcase, playing on the wing alongside San Jose Sharks prospect Filip Bystedt and Ottawa Senators prospect Oscar Petterson.
The Russian-born Swede had no trouble getting on the board in his first game, showcasing his skill as he scored one of seven goals that helped Sweden dominate USA Blue in their first matchup of the showcase.
In addition to that, Suzdalev also impressed with his playmaking ability and creativity, which were also on display just a few weeks ago at the Capitals development camp. His shot is also improving, and he also generated a few strong chances with his speed, positioning and high hockey IQ.
Another interesting tidbit on Suzdalev: he told The Daily Faceoff's Steven Ellis that he would decide on his plans for this year after Washington's training camp comes to a close. He will either return to the WHL's Regina Pats and continue to show what he can do without Connor Bedard, or he can make the pro jump with the AHL's Hershey Bears.
Meanwhile, Ryan Leonard and Ryan Chesley teamed up for USA White against Finland on Saturday. Chesley was steady on the blue line, skating on the top pairing alongside Montreal Canadiens prospect Lane Hutson.
However, Team USA fell 4-2 to the Finns.
Meanwhile, Leonard brought his usual grit and made sure he stood out in numerous ways while skating on the top forward line with Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Isaac Howard and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Frank Nazar.
The 18-year-old put himself very much on everyone's radar with his grit and skill. He played the net front against Finland and also got time on the first power-play unit. Leonard also got physical and even got into a bit of a scuffle.
His style of play is somewhere between T.J. Oshie's and Tom Wilson's, and it should serve as optimism when it comes to the Capitals' future.
