The Washington Capitals are a couple of days away from the 2025 NHL Draft, and though they still have some decisions to make regarding their first-round pick, there are several options to consider if they hold on and select 27th overall.
With the Nicklas Backstrom era officially ending, the Capitals could bring in another promising young Swede in Milton Gästrin, who is ranked No. 3 among all international skaters.
Gästrin is known as a steady, promising and consistent player with a high hockey IQ and a simple game. He's versatile and able to play either center or wing, and he's a great play driver who can make smart passes, move the puck in transition and create time and space for his linemates. It also helps that he has a wicked shot and insane release.
The 18-year-old forward has played at multiple levels with MoDo Hockey and got eight games in the SHL last season, and also usually wears a letter and is trusted as a leader when playing for Sweden internationally.
In 42 games in the J20 Nationell with MoDo last season, he had 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points, and also added 32 points in 19 international games for Sweden's U18 team this past year. He is set to play with MoDo in the HockeyAllsvenskan next season, the second-highest tier of hockey in Sweden.
Gästrin is a young player who plays beyond his years and is able to use his 6-foot-1 frame and speed to his advantage. He's a strong skater who doesn't shy away from puck battles, and he's a smart playmaker who can take on multiple roles in the lineup.
He's projected to go late in the first round, and would ultimately be a solid pickup on the depth chart for D.C. as a player who never gives up on any puck and can make things happen from just about anywhere on the ice. Washington also likes high-character leaders, and Gästrin certainly fits the bill there.
The 2025 NHL Draft kicks off on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
