Former Washington Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek may not be playing, but he's doing what he can to get under the Edmonton Oilers skin as the Florida Panthers face them in the Stanley Cup Final.
Vanecek made waves in Game 4, as he warmed up in front of Stuart Skinner and went on to stare the Oilers netminder down. Backup Calvin Pickard came over and asked Vanecek to stretch somewhere else, but he declined.
Skinner was pulled in Game 4 after giving up the first three goals of the game on 17 shots.
Then, on Saturday ahead of Game 5, Skinner, who lost the starting role to Pickard, skated by Vanecek and appeared to say something to the Czech netminder. He remained unfazed.
Florida went on to win Game 5, 5-2, and take a 3-2 series lead. Now, Vanecek has a chance to win his first Stanley Cup as Sergei Bobrovsky's backup.
Vanecek, who started the year with the San Jose Sharks following his stint with the New Jersey Devils, was traded to the Panthers ahead of the trade deadline in exchange for Chevy Chase, Maryland native Patrick Giles. He replaced Spencer Knight, who was shipped to the Chicago Blackhawks.
In seven games with Florida to close out the regular season, he went 2-4-1 with a 3.00 GAA and .890 save percentage. In 25 total games this season, he went 5-14-4 with a 3.62 GAA and .884 save percentage. He has not appeared in any playoff games.
