The Capitals star had a league-leading 15 goals on the season to move to 27 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record at the time of his injury.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is going to miss some time after suffering a lower-leg injury against the Utah Hockey Club on Monday and is officially listed as week-to-week.
He will be further evaluated by team physicians in D.C. on Wednesday, the team said. Though week-to-week isn't the most promising timeline, it's better than a month-to-month outlook, and nothing at this time indicates that he's done this season.
Historically, the 39-year-old hasn't missed many games due to injury in his career and has recovered fairly well when he does get hurt.
Washington will likely make a recall with Ovechkin out for some time, and he will likely go on the injured reserve to make space for that player to come up from the AHL's Hershey Bears. Options include Ivan Miroshnichenko and Ethen Frank.
In the third period of Monday's 6-2 win, Ovechkin was skating when he collided with Jack McBain in an apparent knee-on-knee collision. It was completely incidental.
Ovechkin needed help getting up and ultimately went down the tunnel. Though he came out to try and see if he could skate again, he struggled to do much with it and retired to the dressing room. He did not return.
It's a tough break for the Metropolitan-leading Capitals, who have seen Ovechkin score a league-leading 15 goals through the first 18 games of the season as he continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky. He is just 27 goals away from breaking the all-time record, and before his injury, was on pace to do it around the All-Star Break.
