ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals got good news on the injury front, as T.J. Oshie took the ice for morning skate on Sunday.
Oshie was the first one on the ice ahead of Sunday's skate prior to their game against the Ottawa Senators at 5 p.m. He was in high spirits and in a regular jersey and stayed on to skate with the group, though he did not take power-play reps.
Oshie will not play on Sunday, but it's at least a positive sign for him to be back on the ice and actively skating again. He had not skated over this recent stretch, and the team had recalled Matthew Phillips as another forward option before re-assigning him on Saturday.
The 37-year-old, who hit 1,000 career NHL games last month, has been out the last three games due to an upper-body injury. It is unclear if it is related to his chronic back issues.
Getting Oshie back would be a major boost for Washington, who has lost the last five games and has the opportunity to jump back into third place in the Metropolitan Division with a win.
Oshie has been playing on the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Connor McMichael over this last stretch, but since his injury, Tom Wilson has mainly been playing that role while Ovechkin has also been reunited with Dylan Strome.
The Capitals have six games left on the regular season circuit, and all of those games are must-win matchups with the standings only getting tighter and two more spots up for grabs.
