The Washington Capitals saw two of their top prospects put on a show in Ottawa on Tuesday, as Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard teamed up to help Team USA capture a big win over Team Canada.
Hutson had a power-play goal and assist, while he also made noise with his celebration by covering his ears to quiet the Canadian crowd. To seal the victory, Leonard scored an empty-netter en route to a 4-1 win.
With eight points through four games, Hutson is tied with Axel Sandin Pellikka for the scoring lead at the tournament. Washington traded up in the 2024 NHL Draft to take Hutson at 37th overall.
Meanwhile, Leonard, who is wearing the "C" for the Americans, has two goals and two assists through four games after leading Team USA to the top of the Group A standings to close out the preliminary round.
Team USA will face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Friday. Fellow Capitals prospect Leon Muggli is on the Swiss team and has three assists through four games.
In addition to those three, Washington prospects Eriks Mateiko (Latvia), Petr Sikora (Czechia) and Miroslav Satan Jr. (Slovakia) will also take the ice on Friday for the quarterfinals. Latvia faces Sweden, the Czechs face Canada and Slovakia will take on Finland.
