World champion figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva offered a closer look at who Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin really is, and couldn't say enough about his impact.
Medevdeva, who met with Ovechkin earlier this offseason, told Sport24 in a new interview that the 39-year-old sets himself apart in several ways.
"Sasha is very open, very sincere, and down-to-earth," Medevdeva said, per a DeepL translation. "It's hard to believe that this man is one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. I don't know any other athlete of his caliber who speaks more freely and calmly than Sasha."
Ovechkin is coming off a historic season with the Capitals, where he overcame a broken leg and scored 44 goals — the third-most in the league — in 65 games to overtake Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer. He broke the record on April 6 against the New York Islanders.
Medvedeva also spoke highly of Ovechkin's easy-going personality, a quality often pointed out by his teammates.
"He has absolutely no limits. He shakes everyone's hand and compliments them, regardless of whether he knows them or not," Medvedeva said. "He's always in a good mood. It's really cool. He's very easy to talk to.
Ovechkin is set to return to the U.S. in the coming weeks for the estart of the new season.
