GM MacLellan Explains Capitals' Decision To Waive Kuznetsov, What's Next For Center: 'It's Been Frustrating On Both Sides'

ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals made headlines with a surprising decision on Saturday, placing center Evgeny Kuznetsov on waivers. For general manager Brian MacLellan, it was a necessary move for both parties going forward.

MacLellan said he spoke with Kuznetsov and his agent before placing the 31-year-old on waivers and explained that the transaction helps both parties hit reset. It also helps Kuznetsov, who expressed his desire for a change in scenery.

"It's about a fresh start for Kuzy, first of all," MacLellan said. "He's been looking for a change in environment, and this might set the wheels in motion for that to be accomplished."

Kuznetsov was cleared to return to practice on Friday and is still receiving care from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, which he entered on Feb. 5. If he clears waivers, he will be assigned to the AHL's Hershey Bears, but the team will consider all options with regard to the Russian's future and it is unclear if he will report to Hershey if that's the case.

"We've had history together and [it's] an opportunity for him to have a fresh start, I think, is the main theme, we're trying to accomplish," MacLellan added.

The last handful of seasons have been frustrating for Kuznetsov, who has 17 points in 43 games this season and has been unable to find consistency or maintain the elite level of play he showcased in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the seasons before that.

"We have a history here that's going on for a while, and I think it's frustrating on both sides," MacLellan said. "So it's just an opportunity for our side to start fresh and to get him to try to give him an opportunity to continue his career."

When asked if he can imagine Kuznetsov playng for the Capitals again, MacLellan said that he could, but that it all depends on him returning to top form. He also said the team would consider a buyout if they get to that point. However, he reiterated that Kuznetsov does want a change.

"I think he's getting some stuff in his personal life straightened out and I think playing-wise, too, I think he needs to find the level that he's accustomed to playing at. Going down there, working at it or maybe another organization, I don't know how he finds it, but I think it's important for him.

"[Waivers] is a means to accomplish what they want," MacLellan added of Kuznetsov's camp.
