Tom Wilson Stays Red-Hot, Continues To Provide Offense
With Alex Ovechkin still working his way back from a broken leg, Tom Wilson has stepped up in a big way to provide offense, and that continued on Saturday.
Wilson, sporting a bubble due to a broken sinus bone in his cheek, put up another two-goal game, with both of his tallies coming on the power play. His first goal came on a deflection off John Carlson's shot near the end of the opening frame, and in the second, he put in Jakob Chychrun's rebound to make it 2-1.
Saturday marked his third multi-goal outing in the last seven games, and he has scored seven in his last eight overall. The 30-year-old has been a leader on and off the ice for D.C., and it's also showing on the scoresheet.
It was a tight game for D.C. throughout, with Jason Zucker and Jiri Kulich keeping things even at 2 for Buffalo. However, Dylan Strome would step up to help D.C. to a crucial win.
Strome redirected a feed from John Carlson past Ukko-Pekka Luukonen to make it 3-2 in the third.
From there, Logan Thompson and D.C. held down the fort to help Washington its first regulation win on home ice since Nov. 6. Thompson had 19 saves on 21 shots, while Jakob Cychrun iced the game with an empty-netter.
The Capitals got a bit of an injury scare, as Rasmus Sandin went down with an apparent leg injury in th second.
Sandin was in a prolonged battle along the boards when Jordan Greenway fell into the back of his right leg, sending the Swede to the ice in visible discomfort.
The referees finally blew the play dead after an extended period, and trainers were able to come out to assist Sandin, who was helped off the ice by Aliaksei Protas and John Carlson. He also needed assistance getting down the tunnel.
However, he returned for the third period and was able to finish the game.
- Chychrun is on a three-game point streak, with a goal and four assists over that span.
- Connor McMichael has points in three of his last four games.
- Carlson had three primary assists.
