A red-hot start paved the way for a huge Washington Capitals win, which puts the New York Islanders in hot water.

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals don't have a playoff spot to go for, but they did have a big opportunity to put a dent in the New York Islanders' playoff run -- and they delivered.

Dylan Strome and Craig Smith put on a show as the Capitals found a way past New York, 5-2.

Here are all the takeaways from the win:

Strome Stays Hot, Smith Steps Up As 3 Capitals Record Multi-Point Games

Strome has been a force to be reckoned with and stayed hot with two goals, extending his goal-scoring streak to four games and establishing a new career high in goals.

Meanwhile, Smith had a strong game, dishing a goal and assist.

Tom Wilson also added to his point streak with a goal and assist as well.

Washington Capitals Win Ovechkin-Less Losing Streak

Washington had lost the last seven games without Alex Ovechkin, and they finally ended a 10-game losing skid when he's injured.

Ovechkin remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Darcy Kuemper Stands Tall

While several Capitals had strong outings, Darcy Kuemper made it a big win.

The 32-year-old netminder stopped 38 of 40 shots for the win and also made a couple of bids for the open net.

Additional Ice Chips

- Conor Sheary now has assists in back-to-back games.

- Washington blocked over 30 shots.
