On this day in 1993, Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets scored his 50th goal of the season, becoming just the third rookie in NHL history to reach that milestone. He did it in spectacular fashion by scoring four goals in a 7‑6 win over the Minnesota North Stars, including his 48th, 49th, 50th, and 51st tallies in that game.

That rookie campaign with the Jets in 1992 93 remains one of the greatest first seasons in league history. Selanne finished that year with 76 goals and 56 assists for 132 points in 84 games, which set the NHL records for most goals and most points by a rookie. Those records still stand today.

Selanne was drafted 10th overall by the Jets in 1988 but did not join the NHL until the 1992 93 season. His blazing speed and deadly shot made him an instant sensation in Winnipeg and earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year.

Across his 21 season NHL career, Selanne played 1,451 games, scored 684 goals, added 773 assists for 1,457 points, and was known for his speed, goal scoring consistency, and longevity.

Selanne’s accomplishments include 10 NHL All Star Game appearances, winning the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as goal leader, earning first and second All Star team honours, and helping the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2007. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.

Jets fans, what is your favourite Teemu Selanne moment from his time in Winnipeg or from his long NHL career?
