CTV’s Devon McKendrick reports that Manitoba Public Health has issued a new warning about potential measles exposure at large events. The latest update follows multiple cases linked to Manitoba Ag Days, which ran from January 20 to 22 in Brandon. Health officials are now cautioning that any large gathering over the next few months could carry a risk of exposure.
High-risk groups, including infants under 12 months, pregnant individuals who are not immunized, and people with weakened immune systems, are being advised to carefully consider attending such events. One newly identified exposure site is Canada Life Centre. Anyone who attended the February 4 game between the Winnipeg Jets and the Montreal Canadiens, particularly in the 300-level seating and concourse, should monitor for symptoms through February 26.
In response, early vaccine eligibility for infants aged six months to under 12 months has been expanded, now including all infants in the Prairie Mountain Health Region. This aligns with the existing policy in Southern Health and Interlake-Eastern regions. Public Health also emphasized that children should still receive two doses of a measles-containing vaccine after 12 months as part of the routine immunization schedule.
This update serves as a reminder that even sporting events, like Jets games, can become sites of exposure, and Manitoba residents are urged to remain vigilant.
