The Winnipeg Jets have extended their winning streak to four games with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning from Amalie Arena on Wednesday night.
Adam Lowry scored the game-winner, while Josh Morrissey picked up a goal and an assist on the night. Connor Hellebuyck earned his ninth win of the year, as the Jets improved to 11-5-2 on the season.
Taking to the ice in the first stop of a three-game road trip over American Thanksgiving, Winnipeg put together a decent effort against the league's top team over the past five seasons.
They took the win and stole the turkey in Tampa, before shifting attention to the Florida Panthers, their Friday night opponent.
"It's a huge win for us," Morrissey said postgame.
"After they scored their second goal we kind of got back to playing our game and not sitting back on a two-goal lead and giving a very good team too much respect," Morrissey said postgame. "We started pushing the pace, and from then on I felt like in the third period we played well and weathered some storms."
Morrissey opened the scoring for Winnipeg just 5:09 into the game, potting his third of the year on a rebound play off a Dylan DeMelo shot.
He picked up his second point of the period midway through the frame on a Mark Scheifele power play deflection. With Mikhail Sergachev in the box for hooking, Morrissey's long-range wrister was tipped home by Scheifele for his seventh of the season.
But then it was Nate Schmidt who found himself in the box for cross-checking and the Lightning struck.
Steven Stamkos hammered home his eighth from his office on a patented one-timer on the man advantage.
Winnipeg gave up the lead in the second period, as Brayden Point jammed home his eighth, six minutes into the middle stanza.
Neither team managed a goal for the rest of the frame, while continuing that trend through the third. Overtime was required, where captain Lowry found his first goal in 10 games.
Lowry's third of the season came with 3:21 remaining in the extra frame, and it was result of a strong defensive shift that led to the three-man offensive effort.
Lowry brought the puck up-ice, before dishing to Vlad Namestnikov. He got the disc to Neal Pionk, who fed Lowry on the doorstep. He made no mistake putting the puck past Jonas Johansson, finishing the game in style for Winnipeg.
"Obviously, with what they've done in the last number of years, just the type of team they are, they're one of the best in the league, they know how to win," Morrissey added. "It's a tough game coming in here, it's hot, you've got to work for every stride. They make you work, so hopefully we can build off that going into Florida. Obviously, they have a good thing rolling there right now too, so just trying to build off this and keep growing our game."
Both netminders turned aside 29 of the shots they faced, with Hellebuyck earning the victory.
With the win, Winnipeg has improved to 11-5-2 and has points in 12 of its last 14 games.
Next up is a Friday night test against Paul Maurice's Panthers, before the Jets travel to Nashville for a Sunday evening showdown against the Predators. Both games feature 7:00 PM start times and can be viewed live on TSN.
