Another day, another victory for the Winnipeg Jets.
Josh Morrissey tied the game with 26 seconds left to play, before mark Scheifele potted the overtime winner, helping Winnipeg to a 2-1 narrow come-from-behind victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Monday.
The win improved the Jets' record to 41-14-3 on the season.
It was first vs. worst on Monday night, as the cellar dwelling Sharks made their way to Manitoba for a test with the league's top club.
As expected, the Jets came out with the win, and in the process improved their franchise record win streak to 10 games.
But it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for Winnipeg; things began awfully shaky and it took until the final minute for the Jets to even score a single goal.
Despite outshooting the visitors 10-6 in the opening frame, the Jets gave up the first goal - by way of a power play strike from William Eklund.
With Nikolaj Ehlers and Jack Thompson already in the penalty box for coincidental roughing minors, Adam Lowry was given a goaltender interference penalty midway into the four-on-four session.
The Jets' captain openly disputed the call with the officiating staff, but Trevor Hansen and his crew stood by their call and handed San Jose a short four-on-three power play. The Sharks needed just 36 seconds to make it count.
William Eklund ripped a one-timer past Hellebuyck from the point, opening the scoring for the visitors with 4:53 left in the first period.
The goal was the only one of the period, with Winnipeg entering the middle stanza up 10-6 on the shot chart, but trailing 1-0 in the category that matters.
The Jets turned up the heat in the second period but still couldn't find a way to beat the suddenly dominant Vitek Vanecek. The closest they came was a Mark Scheifele redirection off a Josh Morrissey point shot. The puck changed directions and found its way past Vanecek, but drilled the goal post and skirted off into the corner of the ice.
That's just the kind of night it was.
Still trailing by one goal entering the third, Winnipeg maintained a 20-14 shot lead through 40 minutes.
Colin Miller came close to tying the game midway through the period, but his heavy point shot also found iron.
Finally, with just 26 seconds left on the clock, Josh Morrissey took matters into his own hands and blasted home the game-tying goal on a boomer from the left wall, sending the otherwise quiet crowd into oblivion as the seconds ticked down.
Then, in overtime, it was Scheifele who finished things off for the hosts, potting his 32nd goal of the season off a play from Nikolaj Ehlers at the point.
“Yeah, we are pretty good six on five, I feel like," Scheifele said. "We’ve got a lot of pretty good players, and obviously, a fantastic shot by J-Mo. That was a big time goal then and obviously another a big win.”
The goal was Scheifele's 329th career marker, moving him into first place in franchise history.
"That's a great accomplishment," head coach Scott Arniel said. "Just shows the longevity, how he's played through his career, and he should be real proud of what he's done so far. He's got lots more to go, but to do it on a game-winner in overtime, he'll remember that one."
Hellebuyck finished the night with 16 stops on the 17 Sharks shots he faced, while Vanecek turned aside 33 pucks in the game, giving up two goals.
Next up for the Jets is a back-to-back road affair in Ottawa and Nashville on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
