Winnipeg Jets forward Adam Lowry becomes eligible for a contract extension on July 1, and is hoping to get a deal done in order to be a "Jet for life."
"I love playing in Winnipeg," said Lowry. "I’ve been very fortunate to have been here my whole career, played in St. John’s, came up through the ranks and just finished my 11th year here. That’s kind of how I picture myself, as a Winnipeg Jet for life."
Lowry heads into the offseason in the final year of a five-year, $3.25M contract he signed in April of 2021. The Jets captain scored 16 goals and 34 points in 73 games this season, serving as a shutdown third-line center. In the playoffs, Lowry scored four goals in 13 games, including the double-overtime winner in Game 7 against the St. Louis Blues.
"I love the city, love playing in front of these fans, and I think that’s something that hopefully we can take steps toward getting that out of the way this summer. There's obviously a few more important pieces that will probably get done before, but I don’t see that being an issue. As long as they want to bring me back, I’m more than happy to come back. It’s such a great place to play."
The Jets selected the 32-year-old in the third round (67th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, and he's been with the Jets ever since. He embodies what it means to play for the Jets and has served as the captain with pride.
The feelings are replicated by general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, who says he'd like to extend Lowry "sooner rather than later." Lowry's openness to returning and bringing a cup to Winnipeg should allow the negotiations to be smooth.
